The EL PASO COUNCIL
OF HIGHER EDUCATION

The El Paso Council of Higher Education applauds Dr Rhodes’ disapproval of a decision by an Administrative Assistant to remove a reproduction of a painting in an exhibit at the Valle Verde Campus. The Assistant acted, without supervisory approval, upon hearing of one complaint by a student who found the work personally offensive.

Dr. Rhodes stated that this action was contrary to EPCC’s commitment to “freedom of expression” and an  “exchange of ideas” at an institution of higher learning.  We also approve of the Art Discipline’s decision to remove all works in the exhibit in protest.

Academic freedom is essential to all who pursue and all who help provide a college education.  This is especially crucial now that El Paso Community College has committed to the Early College High School program where many young minds may be introduced to controversial topics and ideas.

Thank you, Dr. Rhodes, for upholding the tenants of academic freedom at EPCC.

Sincerely,

El Paso Council of Higher Education Executive Committee.
